Museum Bum in Focus: Michelangelo’s David
Posted on 27th February, 2023

One of the most famous bums in art history. David is iconic. Much replicated, the copy most accessible to us in the UK is the plaster cast in the Cast Courts at the V&A.
The original in Florence: 1501-1504 by Michelangelo. Originally commissioned to be one of many on the roof of Florence Cathedral, then it was installed on the Palazzo Vecchio, before being moved inside the Galleria dell’Accademia in 1873 and replaced with a replica.
Our Dave in the V&A: cast in 1856. Presented as a gift to Queen Victoria who immediately swiped him left to the V&A. He was an original inhabitant of the cast courts which opened in 1873.
(This one’s the one in Florence…)
